What is H.E.L.P.?

Mission: H.E.L.P. is a broad-based organization which brings together, trains and organizes the communities of Charlotte-Mecklenburg across all religious, racial, ethnic, class and neighborhood lines for the public good.

Goals: We strengthen congregations, develop local leadership and organize power to act on behalf of justice and the common good.  We hold public and private power holders accountable for their public responsibilities, as well as initiate actions and programs of our own to solve community and economic problems.

Issues: We are multi-issue.  The issues we work on come from within our institutions, from the concerns of the people.  We cross neighborhood, urban, suburban, racial, religious, and economic lines to find common ground and act on our faith and democratic values.

Affiliation: H.E.L.P. is affiliated with the Industrial Areas Foundation (I.A.F.), the oldest and largest national, congregation-based, community organizing network in the United States.  The I.A.F. works with more than 65 community organizations like H.E.L.P. to take action on community, city, county and state issues.

History: In 1993, H.E.L.P. was formed by the local Presbyterian clergy and the Presbytery of Charlotte, working with their brothers and sisters throughout the Charlotte faith community.  H.E.L.P. is a multi-racial and interfaith organization of 64 participating congregations, associations and neighborhoods (37 of which pay annual dues to support our work), whose 110,000 members are African-American, Anglo, Latino, Asian and Native American, from various income levels, political backgrounds and different parts of the city and county.
